About

Discover the Iruya Valley region on a journey that feels like traveling back in time. This transitional environment between the desert and the rainforest develops at high altitude, reaching over 4,000 meters above sea level, where the High Valleys are located. Here, indigenous communities developed self-sufficient farming systems through cultivation terraces built along the mountain slopes.

These ancient structures, fed by springs originating high in the mountains, are still in use today and preserve ancestral traditions that are an essential part of the region’s identity.

Nestled among these legendary mountain ranges is the village of Iruya, a small settlement perched on the mountainside, famous for its stone architecture, colonial church, and living culture.

It is a journey that combines history, extreme geography, and a deep connection with the Andean roots of the region.

Recommendations

Warm clothing is recommended, as some areas are cold and windy, along with water, sunscreen, a hat, comfortable footwear, and light clothing suitable for layering. Due to the altitude, reaching up to 4,000 meters above sea level, it is advisable to stay well hydrated, walk slowly, and avoid sudden physical exertion. Bringing a camera or cell phone is ideal for photographing the valleys, cultivation terraces, and the village of Iruya.
