About
Departing from La Rioja City towards Patquía, known as the “crossroads,” where five roads converge, we continue towards Los Colorados, low mountain ranges rising from the arid landscape and displaying their intense red tones. At the foot of these hills lies the Cave of Chacho Peñaloza, a famous caudillo from La Rioja, where he used to position himself with his troops to evade or await the enemy.
Continuing north along the route and passing through Catinzaco and Nonogasta, we arrive in Chilecito, where we visit Station No. 1 of the Cable Car to La Mejicana Mine and its museum, featuring a magnificent display of what was once a massive gold, copper, and silver mining operation during the first half of the 20th century.
We take a tour through the districts of Chilecito, visiting Samay Huasi, the country house and museum of Dr. Joaquín Víctor González, now owned by the National University of La Plata; alternatively, we may visit the “Chirau Mita” Cactus Botanical Garden, or the Temple of the Child and the Doña Nocenta Pizetta House Museum.
In the afternoon, we continue towards the impressive Famatina mountain range, visiting Santa Florentina, Cuesta Las Talas, Cable Car Station No. 2, and Río del Oro.
